This book is an excellent enhancement to the Bible (up through the life of David)! In fact, I would recommend studying both books in tandem and or/when you get lost or confused about something you're reading. Ellen White beautifully illuminates scriptures - pulling from all over the Bible - that more clearly shed light on the key characters (and events) discussed in the first half of the Old Testament. This, plus her using the full scope of history, shows the reader a near 3D prospective of what the Bible is saying. Perhaps more importantly, it clearly shows how everything in the Old Testament inevitably leads up to the essential life and and sacrifice made by God the Father, through his son, Jesus Christ.
Personally speaking, these writings have truly brought me closer to God by allowing me to more fully comprehend, from more of an academic standpoint, what the Bible is saying (instead of me just trying to go at it alone or with the help of others who seem less inspired and/or knowledgeable on certain subjects). This book is ideal for anyone who gets confused by the stories (for lack of a better word) in the OT , their significance, and what they mean to us as God's children. May God bless you, your studies, and your quest to be closer to Him!
