I have the second edition from 1997, which has been sitting on my shelf unread for many a year now. As someone with a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech, but more focused on software, I basically waded through my electronic/electrical engineering classes, focusing more on getting the grade than learning anything useful. Although I can say that from my background, some of the stuff in this book is very basic, at the same time, I wish I had read this book before entering Georgia Tech 14 years ago. It explains the fundamentals of many electronic components in a very clear and concise way that essentially left me with many a Eureka! moments that I never had with an upper-level college education. In two pages, it clarified the fundamental working of semiconductor diodes and bipolar transistors in a way that an entire college-level semiconductor textbook didn't do. Although some of the information in my edition is dated, it was fun to learn about how the old tubes were used to construct RF amplifiers, etc.
I would love to check out Stan's other books, as he has helped rekindle my interest in engineering that has been languishing now for a long time, and provided me with the fundamental understanding necessary to actually make electronics a hobby of mine.

About the author (2011)

Stan Gibilisco is a technical writer and editor with more than 30 years of literary experience. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 nonfiction books in the fields of electronics, general science, mathematics, and computing. One of his books, the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Personal Computing (McGraw-Hill, 1995), was named as a "Best Reference of 1996" by the ALA. Stan is considered the "father" of the Demystified series, with more than 14 titles published.
