Hilda Downer is a long-term member of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative and North Carolina Writer s Conference. For almost thirty years, she has taught in the Writing Program at Appalachian State University while serving as a psychiatric nurse. She has worked as a volunteer in elementary schools to promote art and the writing of student poetry. She has published poetry and essays in numerous journals and anthologies, and is the author of Bandana Creek (Red Clay Press). She is included in Malone's New Literary Map of North Carolina. She states, Most importantly I am from Bandana and the mother of two sons, who are an artist and a Bluegrass fiddler.
