Samuel Guichenon gives a succinct history of the Lordships and families of this province of France, some of which were intrinsic to the history of the country, such as the Montbel, La Baume and La Balme families, as well as the Grolee and Coligny families. Guichenon, like many of his contemporaries, fell prey to the financial assistance of many of his patrons, by aggrandising some families and relying on previous genealogists' work on others, compounding previous mistakes or falsifying some genealogies in the first few generations. He also favoured those families that had remained catholic to the detriment of others whose service to the state prior to their conversion was of far more consequence.
