This is a book about science: what it is and what it isn't. This is also a book about Christianity: what it is and what it isn't. Statements made by individuals commenting on, or involved in, the on-going battle between some Christians and some scientists reveal misunderstandings about both science and Christianity. These misunderstandings fuel the battle. Science is much more than a collection of facts. It is a way of looking at the world, an attitude. Scientists have their own unique process for finding answers to their questions about the world of nature. It is a fascinating way of life. Scientific facts come and go but science as a way of life will never end.
Christianity is a way of life based on belief in God as revealed to us through the life and teachings of the man Jesus. In this book you will find some discussion of the basics of Christian belief, the Bible as their guidebook, and their view of Jesus. I have restricted my discussion to some of the beliefs most Christians accept. Some critics of Christians are surprisingly ignorant of these basics.
Religious people are often labeled as people of faith, but we are all people of faith. That is the theme of this book. Every one of us has some set of very fundamental beliefs about people and the world around us that guides our thinking and our perception of our surroundings. That is our faith. This includes scientists of all kinds. The way of science has at its foundations some beliefs that cannot be proven or disproven. That is the essential quality of faith: believing in something we accept without proof. Christians can be every bit as rational as any scientist. We actually have over-lapping faiths. |
