Once, Ariston was a Guardian of the Kalliopolis, the perfect city designed by the Philosophers-Philosophers who, in their wisdom, replaced the imperfect human Guardians of Ariston's generation with warrior machines. Phaleas Peneste, a poor farmer's orphan the new Guardians rescued from the devastating winter that killed his family, now serves as their mechanic. Unhappy with their positions in the Kalliopolis's new order, each man decides to escape, a coincidence that leads to their first meeting. Afraid to risk his life in the wilderness beyond the Kalliopolis, Phaleas hesitates and is recaptured by the Guardians while Ariston discovers he doesn't have anywhere to run. Back inside, they begin a secret affair, and Phaleas hopes that together, they might give each other the strength to escape the Kalliopolis forever... but first he has to convince Ariston to try again.

About the author (2012)

T.C. Mill earned her degree in philosophy from a small Wisconsin university. Because there are very few ways to make a living with a bachelor's degree in philosophy, she's also trying her hand at writing. Though it doesn't enable her to earn a living exactly, it does give her the privilege of sharing her ideas. Anyway, the stories ambush her at odd hours and refuse to release her until they are set down on paper. Her future career plans include saving the world, perhaps with the help of yet another degree. In the meantime she's polishing her resume in Washington, D.C. She's written everything from flash fiction in the second person to a novella set in a steampunk version of Plato's Republic. She has also written flash fiction published by Every Night Erotica and Circlet Press. A. More updates and information about what she's doing next can be found at TC-Mill.com.
