U.S. Energy Prospects: An Engineering Viewpoint; a ReportWith the Arab oil embargo of 1973, the United States became aware of its dependence on foreign fuel to maintain its productive capacity, employment base, political autonomy, strategic security, and living standard. An engineering Task Force on Energy was appointed to provide an informed assessment of the realistic strategies that could be initiated if the United States chose to become as independent as possible of foreign sources by 1985, based on technology now known or applicable by that date. This publication presents the analysis, findings, and conclusions of that task force. The task force concludes that the achievement of energy self-sufficiency in one decade would require enormous efforts including voluntary reduction of energy consumption and development of available fuel resources. Central to this report are the roles of government, industry, and the public in advancing a comprehensive energy program in the next decade. Specific considerations discussed in the report include supply and demand, conservation potentials, oil and gas, shale oil, coal supply, and electricity prospects, program constraints and responsibilities beyond 1985.
