Metaphors We Live By
University of Chicago Press, Dec 19, 2008 - Language Arts & Disciplines - 256 pages
The now-classic Metaphors We Live By changed our understanding of metaphor and its role in language and the mind. Metaphor, the authors explain, is a fundamental mechanism of mind, one that allows us to use what we know about our physical and social experience to provide understanding of countless other subjects. Because such metaphors structure our most basic understandings of our experience, they are "metaphors we live by"—metaphors that can shape our perceptions and actions without our ever noticing them.
In this updated edition of Lakoff and Johnson's influential book, the authors supply an afterword surveying how their theory of metaphor has developed within the cognitive sciences to become central to the contemporary understanding of how we think and how we express our thoughts in language.

Within the context of it's field, this text is excellent. It is not only the seminal source for information surrounding metaphors, it is beyond easy to understand. For those outside of the academic circles, I can see how the book would appear tedious or repetitive, however, some further reading in the field would demonstrate the importance of what Lakoff and Johnson have written.
Metaphors We Live By: It turns out, at least for me, that theory is metaphorical, language is metaphorical, life itself is metaphorical. It makes it possible to realize the perspectivism is not an ideal to shoot for, but the very quantum material of social life. I always thought of metaphors the way a typical writer uses them, as descriptive techniques used to add color to a scene, like an artist adding details with a brush. This book showed me that metaphors are, in fact, a much deeper thing in our language, and in fact, the very way we view the world around us. The literary complexity of this book is, mind-blowing.
If you want to better understand the structure of language, I highly recommend this book!
