Great book. Motivating, and full of facts that one can use.

Language is as much power as knowledge, since knowledge conveyed poorly is ineffectual and disconnective. In "Words That Work" Luntz talks about the techniques for utilizing language more effectively, and the process is conveyed through the course of the book so readers can think about language in their own lives, and then think twice about that language. It is an insightful read with many and varied applications (despite the somewhat ridiculous section about traffic tickets,etc.,).

I had to read this for class. It wasn't terrible, but I didn't learn as much as I would have liked. Luntz thinks speakers need to dumb down their language to appeal to the greatest mass in order to be a powerful speaker. He's a fan of repetition, aspirational language... and so on. Pretty interesting, and the author definitely knows his stuff. For some reason I just wasn't drawn in enough to ever quite finish it. But it is still sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to polish it off. :) Read full review
