Perhaps better known for his wine atlases, Johnson's most enduring contribution to my understanding of wine has been this history of wine. Clearly a labor of love, he revises it regularly to keep abreast of the latest scholarship, but he never loses us in the details. This is a seamless narrative that gives wine its proper place in the context of history.
