Integration of ISO 14001 EMS Into ISO 9001 QMS in a Commercial Printer
University of South Carolina, 2008 - 120 pages
When an organization, with a quality management system that conforms to ISO 9001, decides to implement an ISO 14001 based environmental management system (EMS), it should determine the advantages to integrating the two into a single management system in order to create a synergistic effect. There is extensive literature covering management systems' integration throughout Europe, but not so much in the United States. The print industry, in particular, has received very little attention from scholars. It is very hard to find reliable information on the printing industry's environmental performance, let alone on its experience with integrated management systems. In fact, there is little or no evidence of EMS implementation in American commercial printers despite the potential cost savings or increased revenue resulting from increased market share. The majority of commercial printers in the United States are small to medium size companies; consequently, their individual impacts are not so considerable as to fall under environmental regulation (EPA Office of Compliance Sector Notebook Project Profile of the Printing and Publishing Industry 1995), however, their aggregate environmental impacts are significant. As a consequence, it is of a major importance for the betterment of the conditions of the natural world that these small commercial printers implement an ISO 14001 environmental management system in order to better manage these impacts, and encourage innovative thinking so as to find a less environmentally harmful way of doing business. The facts regarding the lack of environmental management system's use within the printing industry, and the potential benefits of printers establishing environmental programs based on a systematic approach stimulated research for this thesis on the implementation/integration of the ISO 9001:2000 quality management system standard with ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system standard within the printing industry.
