As curator and founder of the British Museum of Natural History and a researcher in anatomy Owen had available tremendous resources and created 3 volumes of anatomy for all known life at the time. The books are incomparable to anything else and just as valid in general anatomy today and they were then. Though lacking as many diagrams or illustrations as would be useful, he comprehensively covers general anatomy of species for which there is no other text. It is interesting to see his sections on evolution and Darwin under human anatomy and gives a great context to the debates on evolution of species at the time Darwin first presented his theories and his book "On the Origin of Species". Anyone interested in anatomy or biology, or evolutionary theory should at least take a look at these if not obtain a copy.
