I don't have a background in web design. Occasionally, a project would call for writing some basic HTML, CSS, javascript, or similar high-level technology. The stuff I work on day-to-day isn't every really "seen" by a "user"; in fact, unless it is breaking in front of you then you probably don't even know it's there. I love that deep low-level aspect of technology.
The reason I am so impressed by the Smashing publications, everything of their that I've ever got my hands on, is that they give that deep and rich coverage of whatever topic they are discussing and make it exciting-- engaging.
Well done... smashing, even!
