Twain creates a world where a young poor boy, Tom Canty, constantly beat by his father accidentally changes place with the future king of London. The mistake occurs after the young prince invites the boy into the gates to play, and exchange clothes discovering the two are virtually twins. Once the prince leaves the gates in the wrong clothes he is forced to fend for himself, and avoid Tom’s father and the beating to ensue. Meanwhile at the palace Tom is getting accustomed to the leisurely lifestyle. He soon forgets about the young prince, and the dangers he is undoubtedly facing.
