The properties of materials at high temperatures and in fires are of vital concern in many different areas of engineering. Prediction of the behaviour of different materials such as concrete, aluminium and polymer composites by modelling and testing techniques can provide valuable information. The international conference Materials and Design Against Fire, organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and held in October 1992 in London, brought together international experts from many engineering disciplines to discuss the latest developments in fire safety. Sessions covered the scientific aspects of fire initiation, the properties of materials at high temperatures and in fires, prediction of fire performance of materials and design, and case histories. fires in ships' cabins, the effect of water spray barrier on a tunnel fire, the fire protection of aluminium in offshore structures, a fire protection and detection system for escalators, and a model of reinforced concrete under fire. All of the papers presented at the conference are included in this volume.
