I had seen the film first and it was excellent. Then, I read the book to see which one was better. Both are worthwhile but the book clarifies issues in the book and there is more room to stretch out. This is a well-written and interesting volume from a unique perspective: the devil. Read full review

In the story The Book Thief, The main character of the story is 9 year old Liesel Meminger who is suffering from the death of her brother, and loss of her mother who has to leave her with a foster family because she cannot afford to look after her any longer. The story takes place during the reign of Hitler in Nazi Germany. I felt the historical accuracy was pretty great and it touched so many elements of what happened. The main plot is that Hitler orders the destroying of all Jewish books and there are constant book burnings in the centers of towns. At the beginning of the story, Liesel does not know how to read. She has a book that she took from her brothers funeral and her foster father starts teaching her how to read with that book. Reading opens a new world for her and she sees how powerful words and reading can be. During these book burnings as showed in the picture, she steals books and hides them for her to read. She later reads them to her neighbors and shares stories with a Jew her family is hiding in their basement. They both share a love for books and this is what brings them together.
