To facilitate medical care of the child, information on nutritional factors affecting child health and disease is presented. Thefirst section of the text focuses on infant nutrition. Nutrition during pregnancy, nutrient requirements, and humanmilk and infant formula are discussed. The second section considers nutritional deficiency states. The interactions ofmalnutrition, infection, and the immune response are described. The third section examines nutritional assessmentand support of the hospitalized child. The final section on clinical nutrition addresses nutritional aspects in development and treatment of diseases of the pediatrics patient. These include anorexia nervosa, dwarfism, obesity, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, cancer, inborn errors of metabolism, and renal, cardiac, and gastrointestinal disease. Other chaptersdiscuss food allergy, hyperkinesis, and dental health. |
