Good read, suprising my G grandfather William Martin not in book as he was the only person after Harry Hutchens to win the Sheffield handicaps twice in Dec 1883 and 1884. I have a list of winners and Harry won the handicaps three times.
William was born in the Strand London in 1863, his father John a retired soldier of the 97th Regimnet of Foot died in 1870, his mother Ellen Mccave is still in London but still a single woman in 1870. There is a link from William to the Hutchens family and think he encouraged William to Sheffield where in 1881 he was working in the steel. later a Publican in Pond Street as was his in laws.
