Reading Wise: Comprehension Strategies that Work, Volume 2

Front Cover
New Readers Press, 2003 - Language Arts & Disciplines - 71 pages
This student book represents Level 2 in an eight-level supplemental reading series designed to help students learn and practice a variety of reading comprehension strategies. The number of the book corresponds to the approximate grade-equivalent reading level. This book has 31 lessons focusing on these areas: word analysis, vocabulary, reading strategies, topic, main idea, details, sequence, cause and effect, classification, comparison/contrast, outcomes, conclusions, inferences, and facts and opinions. Each lesson focuses on one strategy and is organized in four parts, which are "This Is the Idea," Take a Closer Look, ""Try It," and "Use It.""This Is the Idea" demonstrates how the strategy works. "Take a Closer Look" shows students how to use the strategy. Questions that include hints and other aids are designed to allow students to experience success. "Try It" helps students use the strategy more independently. "Use It" lets students use the strategy on their own. Each lesson part is built around a reading of a type that adults encounter every day, including labels, ads, rules and directions, charts, menus, news and sports reports, magazine articles, letters to the editor, and voting information. The readings are individually formatted to resemble real-world documents. An answer key in the back of the student book allows students to check their own work. The strategies move from simpler to more complex as students work through a book. The same strategies are covered at different levels, most of them in all eight books. (YLB).
