About the author (1986)

Howard J. Wiarda is Dean Rusk Professor of International Relations and head of the Department of International Affairs at the University of Georgia, and Senior Scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. He is la member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the author or editor of numerous Westview books including An Introduction to Latin American Politics and Development (with Harvey Kline) and Civil Society: The American Model and Third World Development. He is also a contributing co-editor (with Harvey Kline) of Latin American Politics and Development, Sixth Edition (2007, Westview). G. Pope Atkins is research fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of Texas at Austin, and professor emeritus of political science at the United States Naval Academy, where he was a member of the civilian faculty from 1966 to 1993. He has lived and worked in Argentina and Ecuador and has been visiting fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of London, the Fondo para el Avance de las Ciencias Sociales in Santo Domingo, and the international relations department at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 1990-1991 he held the Distinguished Visiting Tom Slick Professorship of World Peace at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. Professor Atkins has written extensively on Latin American international and comparative politics.
