Meher Baba, an Iranian LiberalThe first critical depth study of Meher Baba (1894-1959) to appear since his death. Interpretations are here supplied that conflict with the cult version. The author's approach is not sectarian, and throws new light upon events relating to the Irani mystic who became celebrated as an avatar. The Irani background of Meher Baba is emphasized and given extra context; the subject was not a typical Indian guru. A biographical overview is included, along with a summary of the magnum opus that combines Vedantic and Sufi terminology. The well-known reports of Paul Brunton and Rom Landau are investigated.
