About the author (2003)

White was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He learned to hike in the Cascades. After attending Seattle Pacific University, he relocated to the high desert of Nevada. In the early 1990s he began writing about the outdoors full time. He teaches backpacking and snowshoeing at Truckee Meadows Community College.
