Gullah Statesman is an incredibly well-researched and well-documented biography. The impressive amount of detail Miller provides on the life and times of Robert Smalls is, to date, unparalleled and provides the reader with a very comprehensive understanding of the man, the world in which he and his fellow African Americans lived, his struggles and his triumphs. A biography of this quality on such a remarkable man was long overdue and it is a valuable contribution to political, African American and Civil War history.
