This little book, "The Poor People's Guide to Rich Language for Childern" by Mary Elaine Williams puts the search of the literature on language development of children of poverty into a handy guide directed to parents on how they can help their own children develop skills in using language to prepare them for school. Parents are encouraged to accept their role of being their child's first teacher. Ideas on how to use free, or inexpensive materials and resources in the home, the environment, and the community are presented in simple language with illustrations by the author. Giving the poor parent a peek into the. 'Hidden curriculum' of life and language of non-poverty homes seems to be the goal. Should be helpful in bridging the language gap between childeren entering school from poverty and those entering from non-poverty homes.
