First Workman (singing during this time).--"Wine for the head, Wine for the head and the eyes!" Breugant (to OUDAILLE who is obstinately shovelling).--And you, old fellow, are you content? Oudaille (raising his head, frightened).--I? I? Breigant (pointing out OuDAILLE).--The object you see 'working there, gentlemen, Is naught but a courageous shovel! The nourishment, gentlemen, is introduced By the aperture under the nose And the machine goes on until night (laughter.) OUDAILLE stops a moment to wipe the perspiration of his brow.) Oudaille.--It is hard. (general laughter.) Breugant (walking up the ditch where OUDAILLE is working.) It is surprising how tender the earth Is for these courageous shovels. But what are you hitting so hard? Oudaille.--It is hard! it is hard!--(laughs also.) Breugant (jumping into the ditch).--Oh! oh!...
