XIIL Of the Ananas, or Pine-Apple TH E culture and management of the Ananas, or Pine-Apple, is brought to fb great perfection of late years, that it may be imagined it cannot be now improved, and may feem quite unneceffary to fay any thing refpefling its propagation; but as there many things concerning them materially, which are unknown to the generality of thofe concerned in pine-ftoves, for their inftru&ion I fhall give eafy and fafe directions for raifing the plants, and bringing them to fruit much fooner than by the common method. The common method with the crown 4s to cut off the foft pulpy end that is twifted twifted out of the fruit, and to pull off a few of the under leaves, and lay them fome time in a fhady dry place to harden; then plant them in fmall halfpenny pots, and plunge them into a bed of tanner's bark, made ready in the breeding-ftove for thaE purpofe. It is certain that a plant lying & long in drying, after it is deprived of its nourifhment (the fruit) muft be a detriment to it, and greatly retard its growth, for the leaves become fbft and languid like any other plant that is much dried in a funminy day; and were it not for the nature of the leaves being ftrong, and of a very different texture from woody plants, it would fliew its wrong treatment as much as thofe would were they treated in the fame manner. The cutting off the foft end that is twifted out of the fruit deprives the bottom of the plant from evef pufhing out a root, for it remains to the lafl juft as it v.. was was cut off, and the pulling of the leaves' from the bottom deftroys moft or all off the fmall little knobs that are formed between the leaves, and are the rudiments of the roots, all of which grow when treated in the method here directed..
