The Reading Portfolio was written to address the needs of the first-level college reading student. Central to the approach of this text are our beliefs that Literacy instruction should exist within a meaningful context; andMeaning is constructed by the reader.

Building from these ideas, "The Reading Portfolio places concise reading instruction within the context of interesting and timely thematic units. The exercises and reading selections within each chapter explore a real life issue of interest to students. The chapters on Unstated Main Ideas and Chronological Pattern of Organization, for example, consider risk-taking behavior and career choices, respectively.

In addition, "The Reading Portfolio offers a variety of activities that encourage students to extend their writing and critical thinking skills--that is, to see meaning as something which they themselves actively construct. Throughout the text, portfolio suggestions in particular allow students to show their effort, progress, and achievement and to make connections as they learn. All of the activities in "The Reading Portfolio may be assessed by either traditional means, by the use of a portfolio approach, or by a combination of these methods. While its primary focus is reading, this text recognizes, through the range of its activities, the interrelation of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. It encourages students to pursue development of these interrelated skills. In this way, students can truly enhance their literacy skills and become lifelong readers, instead of reluctant readers.
