Tells the story of Albert and Anna who marry in the Spring of 1891 and prove to be an unmatched couple, she a Lutheran and his background one of crime and obsession. Their children, Paul and Ondine, grow up to be in conflict with society and each other. Author teaches English literature at the University of Melbourne.
