Among young workers, union density in Australia is at historic lows. If we do not reverse this decline, the future of our movement is at stake. We cannot change major structural and political barriers to our growth overnight - but we can find a better way to share knowledge, collaborate and engage in collective experimentation for a common cause: the need to build union membership among young workers. This guide seeks to contribute to this process. It synthesises research conducted in recent years into young workers and their attitude to unions. It outlines the pioneering segmentation research into young workers conducted by the ACTU Insights Unit. It includes substantive case studies of organising by Australian unions that have been shared through the Futures Network, and highlights their lessons.
