The Big Resource Book of Antarctica

Front Cover
Thomson New House, 2007 - Nature - 64 pages
Antarctica is a special place and environment. It is even further south than us. We claim territory there. Our scientists and researchers, along with others from many countries, do important work there. Our country was the Antarctica launching pad for some of the greatest explorers the world has had. People who visit its vastness, coldness, blizzards, snow, ice, glaciers, ice shelves, penguins and seals say it is like a different planet. Yet Antarctic issues such as climate change, scientific discoveries and international cooperation will affect the whole world. The resource-based format aims to provide opportunities for students: to gain new knowledge and skills, especially in literacy; seek, use and create knowlege; become informed decision-makers; practise all the processes of social enquiry such as asking questions, gathering information, exploring values, and developing understandings about social issues; develop key competencies such as managing self, relating to others, taking part and contributing, thinking, and using language, symbols and texts. All strands are covered--culture and how it functions; the relationships between people, places and environments; how past events, experiences and actions help us understand the past and present and help us imagine possible futures; the ways people take part in economic activities"--Back cover.
