Infectious diseases are still the major cause of childhood illness and death in Arab countries from Morocco to Saudi Arabia, and indeed in many other developing countries throughout the world. However, socioeconomic development, better nutrition, improved sanitation, medical advances such as vaccination, and specific host factors, have lead to a distinctive pattern of infections which appears in some areas to be in transition between the patterns found in developed and developing countries.
