This handbook is part of the 'Emergencies in' series, which complements the Oxford Handbooks. This book combines symptom and disease based sections. The first and second sections are symptom-based, exploring assessment, investigation and differential diagnoses. The third section is disease-based and explains how to manage the diagnoses covered in section one and two. The fourth section addresses practical issues from interpreting tests to practical procedures. The fifth section covers investigations. About the author (2007)

Dr Robert Parker qualified from Guys' and St Thomas' Hospitals Medical School in 1999. He completed SHO jobs in Liverpool and London. He is currently a Specialist Registrar in the Oxford deanery undertaking training in General, Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine. Dr Catherine Thomas qualified from St Bartholomew's medical college in 1999. She spent a year at Southend doing house jobs and then a year in Australia working in Emergency medicine. She completed her SHO training at Wexham Park before becoming a respiratory registrar on the Oxford rotation. Dr Lesley Bennett
