This eighth and final volume in a series devoted to the archaeology and history of Tameside discusses the transformation of the rural fringe lordships of Ashton and Longdendale (now lying in Derbyshire) from the mid 17th to late 19th century. These areas were marginal in both political and economic terms and lacked strong control until the onset of industrialisation. Nevell and Walker analyse the archaeological evidence for change from the point of view of three main social groupings: lords, freeholders and tenants.
