"Gantze Dörffer voll Juden": Juden in Niederösterreich 1496-1670

Front Cover
Mandelbaum, 2005 - Austria - 385 pages
Traces Jewish life in Lower Austria during the early modern period. Pp. 293-313, "Christen gegen Juden: Judenfeindschaft im frühneuzeitlichen Niederösterreich", describe the prevalence of anti-Jewish stereotypes among Christians in Austria. Notes that accusations against Jews contained magical elements. The main accusations which, after the 13th century, led to repeated persecutions, were of ritual murder, host desecration, and well-poisoning. While these accusations gradually declined, there was an increase in stereotypes of the Jewish usurer and impostor. In addition, Jews were defamed as deicides and enemies of Christianity. Mentions physical assaults on Jews, and also symbolic defaming acts - e.g. the imposition of random toll and transit taxes.
