About the author

Prof Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran's research and clinical interests are in understanding and improving the quality of life for women and newborn babies. He has been in clinical practice for 37 years and in research and teaching for 25 years. He joined St George's, University of London as aProfessor and then became Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Among his key achievements is the development of a "clinical dashboard" to provide clinicians with the relevant and timely information they need to inform decisions that improve the quality of patient care. He is active with a number ofprofessional organisations and was president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, of which he was president 2009-10. Currently, he is President-elect of the International Federation of Obstetrics and GynaecologyProfessor Arulkumaran has published 24 books as author or editor, 240 indexed articles and more than 150 book chapters.Professor William Ledger is the Head and Professor of the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the School of Women's and Children's Health. He is a senior fertility specialist, obstetrician and gynaecologist and was the Chair and Head of the Academic Unit for Reproductive and DevelopmentalMedicine at the University of Sheffield, UK until 2011. Research projects range from clinical studies to improve safety and efficacy of IVF to molecular biology of the implanting embryo. With 140 refereed papers to his name, and as the joint author of 15 books and over 50 book chapters andpublications, Bill is our most widely published fertility specialist and described by patients and colleagues alike as both a humble and caring specialist.Lynette Denny is a Principal Specialist and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is a registered sub-specialist in Gynaecological Oncology at Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town. She is currently the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynacology. She is also a full member ofthe Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine at University of Cape Town. Her research interest for the past 15 years has been in preventing cervical cancer in low resource settings and she has published widely on the subject. She was awarded the Distinguished Scientist for Improvingthe Quality of Life of Women by the South African Department of Science and Technology in 2006 and is a rated scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa. She was the first recipient of the Shoprite Checkers SABC 2 Women of the Year award for Science and Technology in 2004.Stergios (Stelios) Doumouchtsis is currently a Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist and subspecialist Urogynaecologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George's University of London, UK and aVisiting Professor at the University of Athens, Medical School. Having completed his training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK, he undertook subspecialty training in Urogynaecology. Following the completion of his training, he was awarded an Ethicon Travel Award by the RCOG and worked as avisiting Scholar in the University of Michigan, where he participated in research projects with the Pelvic Floor Research Group. He is a member of several national and international scientific and professional committees, working groups and professional societies. He has authored over 50peer-reviewed articles and over 20 book chapters and has been an invited speaker in national and international confrences.
