About the author (1970)

Historian of modern physics Martin J. Klein was born in the Bronx, New York on June 25, 1924. He received a bachelor's degree in math in 1942 and a master's degree in physics in 1944 from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1948. Before joining the faculty at Yale University, he taught physics at Case Institute of Technology from 1949 to 1966. He wrote the biography, Paul Ehrenfest: The Making of a Theoretical Physicist, in 1970. He was the editor of The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein from 1988 to 1998. In 2005, he won the Abraham Pais Prize, the first major award for the history of physics. He died on March 28, 2009 at the age of 84.
