Israel's Vicious Circle: Ten Years of Writings on Israel and Palestine

Front Cover
Pluto Press, Aug 20, 2008 - History - 230 pages
Uri Avnery is one of the best-known peace activists in Israel and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. He has been involved in, and written about, all major events in Israel's history since its creation in 1948, and was the first Israeli to meet Yasser Arafat. This is a carefully selected collection of his articles from the last 10 years. Additionally, he has written a rigorous introduction that shows how peace can be achieved. Avnery offers a unique perspective on the Middle-East conflict, drawing on his enormous experience of advocating Palestinian rights from within the system as a member of parliament and from outside as a peace activist. Written with passion and wit, his articles reveal and analyse the 'facts on the ground', always pointing out opportunities for reconciliation between the two sides and exposing those who exacerbate the conflict. This book is a must-read for everyone who wants peace in the Middle East.

About the author (2008)

Uri Avnery was born Helmut Ostermann in Beckum, Germany on September 10, 1923. With the rise of Nazism, he immigrated to British-mandate Palestine with his family in 1933. He became a journalist, politician, and peace activist who exposed national scandals and conferred with Yasir Arafat. In the early 1950s, Avnery and Shalom Cohen bought the weekly newsmagazine HaOlam Hazeh and turned it into an independent publication at a time when party newspapers were the norm. Avnery sold the publication in 1989. He was elected to the Knesset in 1965 and served for 10 years. He wrote several books including In the Fields of Philistia 1948: A Battle Log and Optimistic. He wrote regular opinion pieces for the liberal newspaper Haaretz up until he was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. His last column was published on August 7, 2018. He died on August 20, 2018 at the age of 94. Sara R. Powell is an activist, artist and writer. She is the editor of Israel's Vicious Circle (Pluto, 2008).
