Crown of ThornsA biography of King Boris III based on previously unpublished documents, private correspondence, and interviews with surviving members of the royal family. Describes his diplomatic maneuvers between Germany and the USSR, despite Bulgaria's economic dependence on Germany. Ch. 21 (pp. 316-331), "The Jewish Dilemma", deals with the German attempt to deport the Jews of Bulgaria during the Second World War. Under German pressure, King Boris, while personally opposed to antisemitism, accepted the law of 1941 depriving the Jews of their political rights and imposing quotas and taxes, and the deportation of Jews from Thrace and Macedonia. However, he was determined to prevent deportation of the Jews of old Bulgaria as advocated by Aleksandar Belev, the official in charge of Jewish affairs, and some right-wing groups. Boris did not reject German demands outright but sent the Jews to the provinces where they survived the war. |
