An index to the personal names contained in these volumes was published in 1896, in an edition of 100 copies, under title: Personal names in Hening's Statutes at large of Virginia, and Shepherd's continuation / by Joseph J. Casey, A.M. New York, 1896
Publication was suspended after the appearance of v. 4 and resumed according to an act passed March 10, 1819, which increased the subscription, on behalf of the state, from 150 to 800 copies, but made no provision for completing the sets with the first 4 vols. An act passed January 24, 1823, provided for a 2d edition of v. 1-4 to complete the sets. cf. Pref. to 2d edition
